The Rev. William K. Quick has been appointed to direct a new endowment program for the World Methodist Council.

The announcement came in late July from Don V. Fites, former chairman of Caterpillar and chairman of the council's finance committee.

As the leader of the "Achieving the Vision" program, Quick will guide the work of a 14-member committee.

"Our goal is to strengthen the financial foundation that undergirds the World Methodist Council and to ensure a future that is commensurate with new challenges facing the worldwide family of Methodist churches today," explained Frances Alguire, the council's chairperson.

Organized in 1881, the council's 74 members have a membership of 36 million and a constituency of 70 million in 130 nations. With its growth, expectations have increased, according to the Rev. Joe Hale, the council's chief staff executive in Lake Junaluska, N.C. "While the council works effectively with limited resources, world Methodists today have a greater vision of their mission than can be achieved on this basis," he said. "Dr. Bill Quick shares this 'wider vision.'"

Pastor of Metropolitan Church in Detroit from 1974 to 1999, Quick is a frequent speaker at conferences and on radio and television. His immediate goal will be to pursue initial gifts that help support the campaign itself and then begin to build a $20 million endowment.
